Synopsis

Set in the aftermath of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, The Robe tells the story of Marcellus Gallio (Richard Burton), a Roman tribune who, while supervising the execution, wins the blood-soaked garment of Christ in a gamble with other soldiers. As Gallio wears the robe, he begins to experience a series of unexplained visions and dreams, including encounters with Peter (Victor Mature) and other early Christians.

Torn between his duty to the Roman Empire and the growing influence of the Christian faith, Marcellus embarks on a perilous journey to Rome to seek the truth about Christ's teachings. Along the way, he encounters persecution from both the Romans and the Jews, and witnesses the transformative power of faith.

As Marcellus delves deeper into the mystery surrounding Christ's life and death, he is forced to confront his own beliefs and the meaning of his own existence. Guided by the visions and the teachings of the early Christians, he ultimately faces a profound choice that will shape the destiny of both his soul and the Roman Empire.
